Eyewitness statement, page 20 · 22 March 1945
Ship was attacked by fighter enemy aircraft a few minutes
after bombs away. They came from 6:00 'clock high. They started
our main gas tank (right) on fire. The cuncussion threw the left
waist gunner down and` knocked him off inner-phone and oxygen. Some
one in the front of the ship yelled bail-out. The left waist gun-
ner, after a slight shove went out first, I then proceeded after
him. The tail gunner, ball turret gunner, left waist gunner were
in Stalag Luft #1 and came back to the States with me. I never
did see the Radio Operator but other crew members did.
( I did not recognize the voice of the person who gave the
command to bail out as I was flying as a replacement.)
(Ei ther we, 817th Bomb Squadron was off course, or the other
three Squadrons were off course. I could see the rest of the
group way out at three o'clock.)
