FOUR EIGHTY THIRD GROUP (H)
APO 520
Statement of Witness
On 18 July 1944 the 483rd Bombardment Group (H) vent into the
assigned target area without fighter escort or other group support. As
the initial point was approached approximately seventy-five (75) enemy
fighters svept by the group formation on the right making a wide turn at
the ur in preparation for a tail attack.
When the 483rd Group executed the turn onto the bombing run the
four boxes went into the box-in-trail formation. While the turn was being
made, the aforementioned enemy fighters attacked, supported by an addition-
al force of equal fighter strength. The estimated total enemy fighter
strength was approximately 175-200 when the tail attack was made.
Sevon airplanes of the 816th Bombardment Squadron made up the number
four box, and the entire enemy fighter strength made a concentrated attack
on thene seven airplanes. Three B-17's were shot to pieces while in level
"light and while maintaining their positions in formation. A fourth went
dewm, apparently shot out of control, and broke apart as soon as the ship
went into a spin. The three remaining airplanc. of the 816th Squadron
drifted out of formation and appeared to be out of control, two of which
were beginning to burn. Several occasional parachutes vere seen although
c. number of crew members were thrown from their ships and it is unknowm
whether their parachutes functioned.
A considerable number of enemy fighters were shot dowm by the gunners
in these ships while the attack was boing made, but the fighter fire power
was overwhelming. The enemy attack vas made in such a manner that very fow
guns of each airplane could bear on the fightors.
The fighter attack was executed in waves of 5 and 6 ships in close
javelin formation closing directly and on a level with the tail of each B-17.
The fighter waves concentrated on 2 or 3 ships on an attack, and fired only
on the rearmost airplanes.
The fighters moved up to the number three box after destroying the
airplanes of the 816th Squadron, and five ships of the 817th Squadron were
destroyed in the same manner.
Twelve remaining airplanes of the 483rd Group reached the target and
dropped their bombs.

I saw the Ti ghter hit number one engine on ship number 927, and
it caught fire. Then it leveled off and went on it's left wing, and then
in inverted flight. The tail gunner bailed out, no others were seen to
get out. It exploded quite a ways after inverted flight.

Information given on enclosed forms is based upon my experiences on that day
and what information I obtained from Lt. Wojoieohowski several weeks later.
I was flying the position of bombardier and during the ensuing attaok by
enemy airoraft I was manning the chin turret guns. During this battle I was
struck by fire from an enemy fighter which resulted in the loss of my left
leg above the kmoe. While attempting to leave the airoraft which was in
flames, I noted that Lt. Wejciechowski was- bailed out wounded. At that moment
the airoraft went down out of control forcing me back into the nose where I
passes out in attempting to parachute to safety. While I was unconscious,
the aircraft exploded and I was blown out of the aircraft. I regained CON-
sciouness falling through the air and parachuted the rest of the way. I therfore
assume that any crew mumbers that were mot able to parachute were killed when
the airoraft exploded.

assigned target area without fighter escort or other group supports As
the initial point was approached approximately seventy-five (75) enemy
fighters svept by the group formation on the right making a wide turn at
the rear in preparation for a tail attack.
When the 483rd Group executed the turn onto the bombing run the
four bokes went into the box-in-trail formation. While the turn was being
made, the aforementioned enemy fighters attacked, supported by an addition-
al force of equal fighter strength. The estimated total eneily fighter
strength was approximately 175+200 when the tail attack was made.
Sevon airplanes of the 816th Bombardment Squadron made up the number
Cour box, and the entire enemy fighter strength made a concentrated attack
on these soven airplanes, Three were shot to pieces while in level
nlight and while maintaining their positions in formation. A fourth wont
down, apparently shot out of control, and broke apart as soon as the ship
went into a spin.. The three remaining airplanc. of the 816th Squadron
drifted out of formation and appeared to be out of control, two of which
wore beginning to burn. Several occasional parachutos vero seon although
a numbor of crew members vero thrown from their ships and it is unknom
whether thoir parachutos functioned.
A considarable number of enony fightors vero shot dom by the gunners
in those ships while the attack vas being made, but the fighter firo paver
was overnhelming The enomy attack was made in such a nanner that very fow
uns of each airplano could bear on the fightors,
The fighter attack was executed in waves of & and 6 ships in close
javelin formation closing directly and on a lovol with, the tail of each B-17.
The fighter waves concentrated on 2 or 3 ships on an attack, and firod only
on the rearmost airplanos.
The fighters movud up to the number threo box after destroying the
airplanes of the 816th Squadron, and five ships of the 817th Squadron wore
destroyed in the samo manner.
Twolve romaining airplanes of the 483rd Group reached the targot and
drypped their bambs.
