STATEMENT OF WITNESS
On going to the target, ship 585 flew very slow at times, then he would
speed up, probabley using emergency power to oatch up. I did not notice
his having any trouble at the time. We hit Brux and rallied left and dropping
down in the rally. The formation scattered out quite abit on the rally
and 585 was flying 125 to 130 MPH. We got on his wing still flying very
slow and he seemed to be all right at the rally point (Sebastianburg),
time 11:50 and 27,600 feet, he seemed to be alright and under control coming
home. At 11:59 and 23,000 feet we were on his wing again going about 130
MPH. I noticed number three (3) engine was trying to be feathered, but
it never feathered as near as I could observe. Number one (1) engine had
light blue smoke coming out of the cowling, it looked as though it was
starting on fire. Tie contacted 585 on VHF and the pilot said to go ahead
and leave because he was travelling very slow. We left 585 at 1202 at
22,000 feet, (50°10'/13°30'E). He was in control and all four (4) props
were curning over,

STATEMENT OF WITNESS
I was flying number four (4) position on the bomb run, but due to lack
of power in number two (2) and three (3) engines I was quite a distance
fxrom the formation. Ship 143 and 288 were on my wings. After leaving the
targst I was unable to keep up with the Group because I couldn't get rid
of my bc.bs. After leaving Sebastianburg I came upon 585, ship 371 was
flying un his wing. I flew number four (4) position, we were going very
slow (130), at this time 585 called the Group leader end requested that
he slow the formation down so as to enable him to catch up as he hnd
one and one half engines out. He tried to feather nymber three (3) engine
but it would not feather. The ship seemed to be under control, I stayed
with him until we were approximately five (5) minutes away from Sebastianburg.
Ships 143 and 288 had gone to join the Group, at that time we were below
and behind the Group. About three (3) minutes later another Group came
along so I joined their formation. When I last saw 585 he was under
control, flying slow and looseing very little altitude.

STATEMENT OF WITNESS
Ship 585 was leading the squadron over the terget. Immediately after
turning off the rally point a ship called him and asked for more airspeed,
as the squadron was losing the Group formation. Ship 585 called back and
said he was in pretty serious trouble, he just lost an engine and losing
power on another. He then gave the order for the remainder of the squadron
to go on ahoad. That was the last I heard of him. Other ships tried to
contact him later but could not make contact.
