CONFIDENTIAL STATEMENT 2 April 1945 On the mission to Maribor, Yugoslavia, I was flying #7 position. it the target we encountered very accurate flak. Immediately after the bomb run Ship # 42-102836 pulled off from the formation. About 5 minutes later I heard 836 trying to con- tact 003. He was unable to do so, so I answered him. He said he had two engines out and was losing altitude. He asked if I could get him fighter protection. I called the fighter cover for him. I tried several times to contact 836 later on, but failed to do so. About 1110 hours, Ship # 4b-6782 made contact with 836 and I heard 836 say he was throwing out equipment to hold altitude. That is the last I heard from him. JOHN R. MC CORD lst It, Air Corps Pilot, Ship #44-6767 19th chall 31
